Sam Wins Bricklaying Apprentice of the Year

Sam Owen receives his award for Bricklaying Apprentice of the Year at Colchester Institute

We are delighted to share some fantastic news from the Colchester Institute Apprenticeship Recognition Awards, held for the very first time this year.

Our very own Sam Owen, who completed his Level 2 Bricklayer Apprenticeship in July 2025 with Distinctions across all Knowledge Skills and Behaviours, was recognised not only with a certificate of achievement but also with the prestigious title of Bricklaying Apprentice of the Year.

On 20th November, at Colchester Community Stadium, a ceremony brought together apprentices from a wide range of industries, each receiving a recognition award for their hard work and dedication. In addition, one apprentice from each Apprenticeship Standard was selected for the coveted Apprentice of the Year award.

Sam’s commitment, skill, and professionalism shone through, earning him the top honour in his field. His award was presented by Pamela Cox, MP for Colchester, who attended the event and personally issued the certificates.

Alongside his certificate, Sam received a £50 Screwfix voucher and a heartfelt tribute read aloud during the ceremony, recognising his journey and accomplishments.

“Sam has demonstrated exceptional dedication, commitment and professionalism throughout his apprenticeship. His strong work ethic, willingness to learn new skills, and determination to go above and beyond expectations have made him stand out as a true role model.”

Congratulations again to Sam on this well-deserved recognition. His achievement reflects not only his hard work but also the value of hands-on learning, and the importance of apprenticeship programmes in shaping the future of construction.
